Device Integration

Every sensor, platform or data transport connects through the same adapter contract. New devices can be added without changing how the platform understands a heart rate, a temperature or a dose.

Why it matters for long-duration spaceflight

  • Spacecraft carry mixed hardware from different eras and suppliers.
  • Disconnections, clock drift and artifacts are normal in flight and must be visible, not hidden.
  • Unknown vendor metrics must never silently become health facts.

How The Mitochondria addresses it

  • Adapters expose discover, connect, capabilities, stream/import, quality, normalization, resume cursors, clock metadata, health and disconnect.
  • All vendor values pass through the reviewed canonical metric registry and unit normalization.
  • Unknown metrics fail closed and are rejected rather than guessed.

Technical explanation

Lifecycle contract

A shared TypeScript contract defines the adapter lifecycle so conformance can be tested identically for every source class.

Resume and clocks

Sync cursors allow resumable imports, and clock metadata records device time versus receipt time so ordering problems stay explicit.

Reference adapter

A deterministic reference adapter serves as a conformance fixture. It is not a real-device integration or a product simulator.

Implementation status and limitations

    The adapter SDK, conformance fixture and ingestion boundary are implemented and tested.

  • Implemented in repository

    The Device Integration Center exposes browser-available sources such as phone camera PPG, motion context and Web Bluetooth where supported.

  • Requires external host or hardware

    Additional hardware classes require target devices or native hosts that are not part of the public web deployment.

Known limitations

  • Browser device access varies by platform; Web Bluetooth is not available in every browser.
  • Phone camera PPG is a pulse estimate, not ECG or a clinically validated measurement.
